How Does God Reveal Himself?

Discover the various ways God reveals Himself to man, including through prophets, dreams, and His inspired word. Learn why the word of God is sufficient for knowing His will today.

God reveals Himself in different ways to man, before now and even now.

Let us read Philippians 2:12-16. “Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me v. 12. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead v.13, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus v.14. Therefore, let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you v.15. Nevertheless, to the degree that we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us be of the same mind” v.16.

How God Reveals Himself To His Children?

Let us consider the following media:

Through His Prophets. “Surely the Lord God does nothing, unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets” (Amos 3:7).

Through His inspired word (Hebrew 1:1-2)

Through dreams to both Jews and non-Jews

“He reveals deep and secret things; He knows what is in the darkness, and light dwells with Him” (Daniel 2:22).

Examples of dreams

Joseph, son of Jacob and Rachel, dreamt. King Pharaoh dreamt also.  King Nebuchadnezzar dreamt repeatedly: “Now in the second year of Nebuchadnezzar's reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; and his spirit was so troubled that his sleep left him” (Daniel 2:1).

Hand writing on the wall speaks of God’s imminent actions

King Belshazzar received such enigma (sign) (Daniel 5:1-12).  “…Now all the king's wise men came, but they could not read the writing, or make known to the king its interpretation. Then King Belshazzar was greatly troubled, his countenance was changed, and his lords were astonished. The queen, because of the words of the king and his lords, came to the banquet hall. The queen spoke, saying, "O king, live forever! Do not let your thoughts trouble you, nor let your countenance change. There is a man in your kingdom in whom is the Spirit of the Holy God. And in the days of your father, light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, were found in him; and King Nebuchadnezzar your father --- your father the king --- made him chief of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers. Inasmuch as an excellent spirit, knowledge, understanding, interpreting dreams, solving riddles, and explaining enigmas were found in this Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar, now let Daniel be called, and he will give the interpretation””.

Through the Priest using Urim and Thummim (Exodus 28:30; Ezra 2:63; Nehemiah 7:65).

Through the Holy apostles, apart from the prophets, God revealed Himself to mankind

Paul, “the prisoner of Christ Jesus for you Gentiles”, wrote: “…how that by revelation He made known to me the mystery (as I have briefly written already, by which, when you read, you may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ), which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets” (Ephesians 3:3-5).

Other warnings: God communicated through famine, pestilence, swords (wars).

Conclusion

When a person is rejected, God will not answer Him through His prophets and other means. King Saul, for example, was not answered through dreams, prophets and Urim (1 Samuel 28:6). The word of God is adequate for us today to know His will.  “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63).

2 Timothy 3:16-17 says: “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (see also, James 1:21; 2 Timothy 3:15; John 5:39).
